Over the years Smith's work has evolved into a kaleidoscope of different media and materials and most recently she has worked with monotypes, a new and fascinating study which allows for a different depth and new perspective to her "language". Texture and materials are key elements of the work. Concerns with the dynamic complexities of opposing forces are played out: light and shadow, flowing and static, simple and complex, fragile and strong, fluid and controlled”.

Pat Smith was born and educated in England. She moved to Paris, France where she studied ceramics at the atelier of Francine del Pierre and the atelier of Jean Lugassy. She and her American husband and their three children continued living in Paris where Smith began teaching at The American University in Paris and later at The Parsons School of Design in Paris. After the family's return to New York City, Smith concentrated almost solely on her own body of work and exhibited widely in the U.S. She now lives and works in Old Lyme, CT.
